Australian Lutheran World Service Awareness Day
In Week 9 of Term 1, Year 7 students participated in the Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) Awareness Day, presented by ALWS Community Action Officer, Julie Krause. The theme for this year was ‘Survive or Thrive’, with a focus on poverty stricken areas of Asia.
In keeping with the ‘Survive or Thrive’ theme, students participated in a range of activities including “Survivor” inspired challenges and team building activities. Students also experienced what food in a struggling area of Asia would be like through eating a recess and lunch similar to what would be eaten daily overseas.
They were also encouraged to think of ways that they could work within our community to support communities overseas. Their brainstorm will provide a good start for their Christian Living Service Unit next term, with so many great ideas, including to raise money for hygiene education, toilets, bikes, seeds and education for farming, medical supplies, water pumps, and tarps for families to shelter from rain.
It was wonderful to see the Year 7’s making connections and becoming inspired to help others around the world who are less fortunate than themselves.
